Class Descriptions
At Joni's Dance Studio, we offer a wide variety of classes for dancers ages 2+.
To learn more about our classes, their levels and see which classes are right for your dancer please read the descriptions below:
-Lower Level Program: Level 1-2 (Tap, Ballet, and Acro Combo Class), Jazz/Hip Hop Combo Class for Level 2
-Mid Level Program: Level 3-4 (Acro, Ballet, Contemporary/Lyrical, Hip Hop, Jazz, Tap)
-Upper Level Program: Level 5-7 (Acro, Ballet, Contemporary/Lyrical, Hip Hop, Jazz, Tap)
-Acro Program: Level 1-8
-Specialty Classes: Stretch & Conditioning, Middle School & High School Jazz/Leaps & Turns
LOWER LEVEL PROGRAM:
Level 1 Tap, Ballet & Acro:
This class combines tap, ballet and acro basics for our youngest dancers. Coordination, musicality and a love for dance will be nurtured. No previous experience is necessary.
Recommended ages 2-4.
Level 2 Tap, Ballet & Acro:
This class focuses on the fundamentals of tap and ballet technique, acro fundamentals, teaches dance terminology and continues the progression of body coordination while exploring different rhythms. This class is for dancers with 1-2 years of experience.
Recommended ages: 4-7
Hip Hop & Jazz 2:
This class is an introduction to the stylized movement of hip hop and jazz technique. This class will begin with a warm up focusing on the strength & flexibility to initiate technical skills. Dancers in this class will learn how to isolate their movements while working on picking up basic hip hop choreography during weekly class combinations. For jazz, the dancers will work on center floor exercises, across the floor progressions, leaps, and turns. No previous experience is necessary, this is an intro level class.
Recommended Ages: 4-7
MID LEVEL PROGRAM:
Ballet 3:
This class will continue to reinforce the fundamental technique of ballet while working towards more advanced movements and expanding on dance terminology.
Recommended Ages: 7-9
Tap 3:
Dancers in this level must have a basic knowledge of tap terminology and will work on rhythm. Dancers will continue to perfect their tap basics while exploring combinations in class.
Recommended ages: 7-9
Jazz 3:
This class will teach basic Jazz technique, fundamentals and terminology including center floor exercises, across the floor progressions, leaps, and turns.
Recommended Ages: 7-9
Hip Hop 3:
This class will focus on the stylized movement of hip hop. Dancers in this class will learn how to isolate their movements while working on picking up basic hip hop choreography during weekly class combinations at a quicker pace.
Recommended Ages: 7-9
Contemporary/Lyrical 3:
This class is designed for dancers to start learning basic contemporary/lyrical technique and terminology. In this class your dancer will explore the softer movements of contemporary/lyrical through choreographed class combinations.
Recommended ages: 7-9
Ballet 4:
This class is for developing a strong foundation of ballet technique. Dancers should know basic ballet terminology and demonstrate the ability to apply corrections. Students enrolled in this class will be trained at the barre and center floor using the Vaganova method.
Recommended ages: 9-11
Tap 4:
Dancers in this level must have a basic knowledge of tap terminology and a good understanding of rhythm. Dancers will continue to perfect their tap basics while exploring combinations in class.
Recommended ages: 9-11
Jazz 4:
This class focuses on developing a strong foundation of jazz technique. Dancers should be able to do the following: single jazz turn on both sides, split leap on both sides and a high kick on both sides. Dancers enrolled in this class will be expected to have an understanding of jazz and ballet technique.
Recommended ages: 9-11
Hip Hop 4:
This class is designed for dancers with previous hip hop experience. Dancers in this class will continue to explore movements and unique stylized tricks while working on picking up hip hop choreography during weekly class combinations. Recommended ages: 9-10
Contemporary/Lyrical 4: This class is designed for dancers with some jazz and lyrical experience. Dancers in this class will learn how to portray emotion with their movements while working on picking up choreography during weekly class combinations.
Recommended ages: 9-11
Contemporary/Lyrical 4
This class is designed for dancers with some jazz and lyrical experience. Dancers in this class will learn how to portray emotion with their movements while working on picking up choreography during weekly class combinations. This class is for dancers with at least 4-6 years of previous contemporary/lyrical training.
Recommended ages: 9-11
UPPER LEVEL PROGRAM:
Ballet 5:
This is considered an intermediate level class. This class will begin with a warm up focusing on the strength & flexibility to initiate technical skills. Dancers should have a good knowledge of ballet terminology and demonstrate a good technical foundation. This class will follow the Vaganova method to train at the barre, center floor and expand on more advanced movement.
Recommended ages: 11-12
Tap 5:
Dancers in this level should have a thorough knowledge of tap terminology and have a good understanding of rhythm. They will continue to perfect their tap skills and enjoy bi-weekly class combinations that challenge their skills.
Recommended ages: 11-12
Jazz 5: This is considered an intermediate level class. This class will begin with a warm up focusing on the strength & flexibility to initiate technical skills. Dancers should be able to do the following: Double Jazz Turn on both sides, Split Leap on both sides, and Leap in Second on both sides.
Recommended ages: 11-12
Hip Hop 5: This is considered an intermediate level class. Dancers enrolled in this class should have good body awareness and be able to pick up choreography at a quick pace. Dancers in this level will learn skills and tricks unique to the style and given weekly combinations which encourage them to develop their own style through the different genres of hip hop.
Recommended ages: 11-12
Contemporary/Lyrical 5:
Dancers in this level should have a strong technical foundation and good body awareness. Dancers in this level will learn skills and tricks unique to the style and will be given weekly combinations and improvisation challenges.
Recommended ages: 11-12
Ballet 6:
This is considered an intermediate/advanced class. This class will begin with a warm up focusing on the strength & flexibility to initiate technical skills. Dancers should have a good knowledge of ballet terminology, perform more advanced movements with a strong technical foundation, demonstrate sufficient flexibility and uphold the self discipline to continually apply corrections. This class will follow the Vaganova method to train at the barre, center floor, and continue to expand on more challenging movement.
Recommended ages: 12-15
Jazz 6: This is considered an intermediate/advanced class. This class will begin with a warm up focusing on the strength & flexibility to initiate technical skills. Dancers should be able to do the following: triple jazz turn on both sides, split leap on both sides, leap in second on both sides, calypso on both sides, tilt jumps on both sides, turns in second on both sides and demonstrate sufficient flexibility.
Recommended ages: 12-15
Hip Hop 6: Dancers should have excellent body awareness and be able to pick up choreography at a very quick pace. This class will focus on diverse varieties of movement found throughout the current styles of hip hop. Dancers will be challenged with class combinations and improvisation.
Recommended ages: 12-15
Contemporary/Lyrical 6: This is considered an intermediate/advanced class. Dancers should have a strong technical foundation, excellent body awareness and demonstrate sufficient flexibility. Dancers will be challenged with class combinations and improvisation.
Recommended ages: 12-15
Tap 6/7: This is considered an advanced level class. Dancers in this level are expected to have extensive knowledge of tap terminology and be able to interpret music patterns and rhythms. Dancers in this level will enjoy weekly class combinations that challenge their skills and continue to learn advanced level moves.
Recommended ages: 13+
Ballet 7:
This is considered an advanced level class. This class will begin with a warm up focusing on the strength & flexibility to initiate technical skills. Dancers should have a solid foundation of ballet terminology, perform advanced movement with an excellent technical foundation, demonstrate extensive flexibility and uphold the self discipline to continually apply corrections. This class will follow the Vaganova method to train at the barre, center floor and continue to expand on more challenging movement including variations.
Recommended ages: 15+
Jazz 7:
This is considered an advanced level class. This class will begin with a warm up focusing on the strength & flexibility to initiate technical skills. Dancers should be able to do the following: consistent quad jazz turns on both sides, split leap on both sides, leap in second on both sides, calypso on both sides, firebird on both sides, tilt jump on both sides, turning russian, consistent 10 turns in second on both sides, inside/outside leg grab turn and have left/right/middle splits.
Recommended ages: 15+
Hip Hop 7: This class is for dancers who demonstrate an advanced mastery of the style. Dancers should have excellent body awareness and be able to pick up choreography at a very quick pace. This class will focus on diverse varieties of movement found across the styles of hip hop. Dancers will be challenged with class combinations and improvisation.
Recommended ages: 15+
Contemporary/Lyrical 7: This is considered an advanced level class. Dancers should have a strong technical foundation, excellent body awareness and demonstrate sufficient flexibility. This class will focus on diverse varieties of movement found throughout the current dance world. Dancers will be challenged with class combinations and improvisation as well as integrate the fundamentals of becoming a choreographer.
Recommended ages: 15+
Acro Program:
***The acro classes will not participate in the annual spring recital. Acro is strictly a skills-based technique class. Acro skills will be highlighted across spring recital dances.***
Acro 3:
This class WILL NOT participate in the annual spring recital. This is an intro level class for dancers wanting to explore the style of acro. Dancers in this class do not need any prior acro training. This class will focus on proper acro technique for cartwheels, backbends, handstand tuck and roll, front overs, back kick overs and chin stands. This class will be working towards mastering a back kick over and front over.
Recommended ages: 7-8
Acro 4:
This class WILL NOT participate in the annual spring recital. Dancers enrolled in this class should be able to do a front walk over and back walkover unassisted. This class will continue to perfect previously learned skills and work towards progressions and variations of skills such as headstands, one hand front walkovers and butterflies. Recommended ages: 9-10
Acro 5:
This class WILL NOT participate in the annual spring recital. This class is for dancers who have mastered the following skills: front walkover, back walkover, head spring, and a side aerial. This class will continue to perfect previously learned skills and develop their non-dominate sides.
Recommended ages: 11-12
Acro 6:
This class WILL NOT participate in the annual spring recital. This class is for dancers who have mastered the following skills: front walkover, back walkover, head spring, and a side aerial. This class will continue to work on progressions and variations such as valdez, head nips, kip ups and stringing together various skills in combination. Recommended ages: 13-14
Acro 7:
This class WILL NOT participate in the annual spring recital. This class is for dancers who have mastered the following skills: side aerial and back handspring or front aerial without a spot. Dancers in this class will begin to work on advanced tumbling passes including, including but not limited to round off back handsprings.
Recommended ages: 15+
Specialty Classes:
Pre-Pointe/Pointe:
This class is for dancers who have had several years of training in ballet and want to start working towards being on pointe. This class is considered a supplemental class for our regular level ballet classes in levels 3/4 and 5/6/7. Dancers will start with pre-pointe strengthening and training until the teacher invites them to go on pointe. Required additional classes: Ballet in their respective level
Stretch & Conditioning:
This class is designed for dancers of all ages and offered at various times during the week. This 30-minute class is an excellent way for your dancer to increase their flexibility and improve arm, core & leg strength.
Recommended ages: 8+
Middle School Jazz/Leaps & Turns:
This class WILL NOT participate in the annual spring recital. This class is an all inclusive class for middle school age dancers. The class will focus on intermediate-advanced level turns, leaps and kicks all while re-enforcing the basic fundamentals of technique. This class will also introduce some acro skills and tricks.
Recommended ages 11-14
High School Jazz/Leaps & Turns:
This class WILL NOT participate in the annual spring recital. This class is an all inclusive class for high school age dancers. The class will focus on advanced level turns, leaps and kicks all while re-enforcing the basic fundamentals of technique. This class will also introduce acro skills and tricks.
Recommended ages 14+
